𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑹𝑰𝑽𝑬𝑹 𝑻𝑯𝑨𝑻 𝑹𝑬𝑭𝑼𝑺𝑬𝑫 𝑻𝑶 𝑫𝑰𝑬

𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘬𝘺𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴. 𝘐𝘭𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳.

Once dismissed as a polluted estuary suffering from decades of neglect, the Iloilo River has become one of the Philippines' most celebrated examples of urban ecological restoration. Its transformation has earned recognition not just at home, but on the world stage.

The river rehabilitation program received the 𝘎𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 at the 2010 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘊𝘰𝘮 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴, followed by the 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 at the 2011 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘊𝘰𝘮 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 for advancing integrated and sustainable river management.

In 2013, the Iloilo River became the 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘈𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵 in the prestigious 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘻𝘦... 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥'𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.

The rehabilitation program also won the 2018 𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥, recognizing it as one of the country's most outstanding local governance innovations.

More recently, the Iloilo River Esplanade received the 2024 𝘈𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 for exemplary urban landscape design and sustainability.

Its influence reached beyond Iloilo. In 2015, experts, policymakers, and environmental leaders from across the Asia-Pacific gathered in the city to adopt the 𝑰𝒍𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒐 𝑫𝒆𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒏 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑹𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑩𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕... a landmark call for science-based, community-driven, and climate-resilient river governance that continues to inspire watershed restoration efforts across the region.
