Have You Heard of Carlos Bulosan- Author, America is in the Heart ?

He came off the boat in Seattle in 1930, seventeen years old, and America shanghaied him almost the moment he stepped ashore, sold for five dollars to a fish cannery bound for Alaska. From there Carlos Bulosan followed the harvest the way so many manongs did, down through Washington and into the fields of California, stooping over grapes and asparagus for pennies, sleeping where he could, beaten and turned away for the crime of being Filipino in the land that colonized him.
Tuberculosis put him in a Los Angeles hospital ward for two years, and there, half dead, he taught himself to write. What came out was America Is in the Heart, the book that finally told the Filipino-American story in the Filipino-American voice. He organized cannery workers out of Stockton's Little Manila, got blacklisted for it in the 1950s, and died broke in Seattle in 1956. They nearly forgot him. We do not. We see you, Carlos.
