Here's one submission to the Essay Contest," Why I want to Visit Marinduque" that I have received via e-mail.
My reason for I wanting to visit Marinduque is to get re-connected back to my roots. I am, what you might want to refer to as, an ex-pat. Though we grew up in Manila, our folks (from Laylay (ay, mandin!) & Torrijos (yano ka!)) would allow us to spend what turned-out to be the most unforgettable summer vacations in this, what I now fondly refer to as:, 'my little piece of heaven on earth'. At the time, we have not developed a true appreciation of this quaint little island which, by the way, I hope will remain unchanged for the next little while. I only came to the realization of the beauty of this province after my husband (from Manila) has adopted Marinduque to be his own. Hey maybe, just maybe, Marinduque has adopted him!. He has gravitated to the place from it serene beaches, to it's native dishes (adobong manok sa luyang dilaw, panganan, putong tinta, just to name a few). He particularly enjoys the pleasant ambiance brought about by its warm and friendly people.
During cold, dark & dreary winter in a foreign land we had since chosen to call home, his happy thoughts would be lying on the warm sandy beach of Poctoy admiring the view of Mt Malindig while a bunch of fishermen pull-in a boat full of the day's catch. Because for a moment, it did seem that, life couldn't be nothing short of . . . perfect. Can you really blame the man whose been fortunate to visit a number of European & American cities, to want to come back to Marinduque for yet another visit? As for myself, the thought of the place is an welcome escape from the daily grind. Getting there will be an ultimate treat!
