FROM BOAC, HE MADE IT TO ROME AND LONDON.
I was introduced to Macrine through her uncle, the late Reverend Father Constantino “Fr. Tino” Nieva. Fr Tino was President of UPSCA in Diliman in 1952. We corresponded because I was also the President of UPSCA, Iloilo Chapter.
There are Marinduqueans who didn't make it big in their hometown but their names made it around the world.
One of them is Fr. Constantino Sarmiento Nieva, a native of Boac, Marinduque who first studied law at the University of the Phiphilippines in 1952, and became the head of UP Student Catholic Action while still a law student.
He graduated in Law in 1953 and then practiced law before choosing the priesthood.
He went to Rome, where he obtained a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1970.
And that's when his story became quite the story.
His doctoral research became the book This Transcending God: The Teaching of the Author of The Cloud of Unknowing, published in London in 1971.
He also served as a priest in New York, where he resided and ministered for many years.
A boy from Boac traveled from Marinduque → UP → priesthood → Rome → London → America.
And after a long life of service and study, his story returned to Marinduque.
He was buried in Boac in 2011. A lawyer. A priest. A theologian. A scholar. A Marinduqueño.
And the question now is: How many Marinduqueans know that a son of Boac once published theological scholarship in London?
