TasteAtlas’ Top 50 Savory Pastries (Aug 2025) celebrates the world’s best, and today, we’re exploring the top 10 — complete with ingredients, traditions, and preparation.

1. Pazarske Mantije (Serbia) ⭐4.7

Description: A specialty from Novi Pazar, these small, round pastries are similar to mini bureks, tightly packed together in a tray.

Ingredients: Phyllo dough, ground beef or lamb, onion, salt, pepper, and yogurt for serving.
Preparation: Dough is rolled thin, filled with spiced minced meat, shaped into little spirals or bundles, and baked close together until golden. Traditionally served with yogurt or kefir.

2. Burek (Balkans, esp. Bosnia & Turkey) ⭐4.5

Description: The most famous Balkan pastry, a spiral or layered pie with meat or cheese filling.

Ingredients: Thin phyllo dough, minced beef or lamb, onion, oil, salt, pepper.
Preparation: The filling is spread onto sheets of dough, rolled into coils or layered, and baked until crisp. Often enjoyed with yogurt or ayran.

3. Banitsa sas Sirene (Bulgaria) ⭐4.5

Description: A classic Bulgarian breakfast pastry. “Sirene” refers to a tangy white cheese similar to feta.

Ingredients: Phyllo sheets, Bulgarian sirene cheese, eggs, yogurt, and oil.
Preparation: Cheese and egg mixture is layered between sheets of dough, rolled or coiled into a spiral, then baked. Served hot with yogurt or boza (fermented wheat drink).

4. Karipap (Malaysia) ⭐4.5

Ingredients: Wheat flour pastry, potatoes, chicken or beef, curry powder, onion, garlic, hard-boiled egg.
Preparation: The filling is stir-fried, cooled, then wrapped in dough rounds. Edges are crimped into a rope-like seal, and the pastries are deep-fried until golden.

5. Burek sa Sirom (Serbia/Balkans) ⭐4.5

Ingredients: Wheat flour, olive oil, stracchino cheese, salt, water.
Preparation: Two ultra-thin dough sheets sandwich soft cheese, drizzled with olive oil, then baked in a hot oven until blistered.

7. Pastel (Brazil) ⭐4.4

Description: A deep-fried street food snack, usually sold in markets alongside sugarcane juice.

Ingredients: Pastry dough (wheat flour, cachaça, oil), fillings like ground beef, cheese, chicken, or palm hearts.
