I just watch the movie, It Is in Us All, an Irish independent film released in 2022 and directed by Antonia Campbell-Hughes. The title is sometimes stylized as “IT IS IN US ALL.” It is a haunting, atmospheric psychological drama set in the rugged countryside of County Donegal, Ireland. 💚The movie is long and a little bit slow, but I enjoyed it.
What the Movie Is About
The story centers on Hamish Considine, played by Cosmo Jarvis, a troubled and emotionally distant man who returns from London to rural Ireland, the homeland of his deceased mother. Soon after arriving, he is involved in a terrible car accident that kills a teenage boy and leaves another boy, Evan, alive.
After the crash, Hamish begins forming an intense and unsettling relationship with Evan, the surviving teenager. As the story unfolds, Hamish is forced to confront buried emotions, childhood trauma, loneliness, grief, sexuality, rage, and his complicated relationship with his father. The Irish countryside itself almost becomes another character in the film — beautiful, isolated, mysterious, and emotionally heavy.
The movie is less about action and more about psychology and emotion. It explores questions such as:
- Is violence and darkness already inside all of us?
- Can trauma awaken hidden parts of our personality?
- How do grief and isolation affect identity?
- What happens when a person loses emotional control?
The title, It Is in Us All, suggests that both darkness and humanity exist within everyone. The film leaves many scenes open to interpretation, which is why some viewers consider it an “arthouse” psychological drama rather than a straightforward thriller.
Themes of the Film
Some major themes include:
- Identity and self-discovery
- Suppressed emotions and sexuality
- Trauma and grief
- Masculinity and emotional repression
- The pull between civilization and primal instincts
- Ireland’s lonely rural landscape as emotional symbolism
The movie received praise for its cinematography and mood, though some viewers found it slow and unsettling. It premiered at the South by Southwest film festival and won attention for its artistic style and powerful visual storytelling.
If you enjoyed this film, you might also appreciate other modern Irish psychological dramas such as:
- The Banshees of Inisherin
- Calm with Horses
- The Quiet Girl
These films similarly explore loneliness, Irish identity, emotional repression, and the beauty and sadness of rural Ireland.
Here's the full movie: Enjoy!
