🎯 DAVID'S SCRABBLE CHEAT SHEET
These are the words I would memorize first:
QI • ZA • XI • XU • JO • KA • KI • KO • KY • AX • EX • OX • BY • MY • FY • HM • SH • CH • GO • ID • IF • IN • IS • IT • ME • MU • OE • OH • OK • OM • OP • OR • OW • OX • PI • SO • TO • UH • UM • UP • US • WE • WO • XI • XU • YA • YE • YO
The “killer” ones:
QI, ZA, XI, XU, JO, AX, EX, OX
Memorizing these alone can noticeably improve your game.
2. 🔤 Words Beginning With Q That DON'T Need U
These are extremely valuable because you can get stuck with a Q.
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| QI | life force |
| QAT | a shrub |
| QIS | plural of QI |
| QADI | Muslim judge |
| QAID | Muslim leader |
| QOPH | Hebrew letter |
| QWERTY | keyboard arrangement |
| QIBLA | direction toward Mecca |
| QANAT | underground water channel |
| QWERTYS | plural of QWERTY |
QI is the one I would absolutely memorize.
3. 🟣 Z Words — Your High-Scoring Friends
The Z is worth 10 points in standard English Scrabble.
ZA — ZAP — ZAG — ZIG — ZAX — ZED — ZEN — ZIP — ZIT — ZOO — ZAP — ZANY — ZINC — ZING — ZONE — ZOOM — ZEST — ZERO — ZEBRA — ZIPPY — ZONED — ZIPPED — ZAPPER — ZOMBIE — ZIGZAG
And some excellent longer ones:
ZIZZ — ZIZITH — ZODIAC — ZOMBIES — ZAPPING — ZIPPING — ZIPPERS — ZEBRAS
Strategy: When you have a Z, don't automatically play it immediately. Look for a Triple Letter square. A Z on a Triple Letter Score is worth 30 points before the rest of the word is counted.
4. 🟠 J Words
The J is worth 8 points, making it another letter to exploit.
JO — JAB — JAM — JAR — JAW — JAY — JET — JIG — JOB — JOG — JOT — JOY — JUG — JUT
Then:
JAZZ — JINX — JUMP — JUNK — JOKE — JACK — JEWEL — JOKER — JAZZY — JUMPY — JINXED — JUMPED — JAZZED
⭐ Particularly valuable
JAZZ = 29
JAZZY = 34
JAZZED = 35
If you see an opportunity to put the J or Z on a Triple Letter, grab it!
5. ❌ X Words
The X is worth 8 points.
Some very useful ones:
AX • EX • OX • XI • XU
Then:
AXE • BOX • COX • FOX • FIX • MAX • MIX • TAX • VEX • WAX
And:
EXAM • AXIS • BOXED • FIXED • MIXED • OXIDE • OXEN • TAXED • WAXED • VEXED
My favorites:
AX, EX, OX, XI, XU, VEX, WAX, BOX, TAX
These are particularly useful because you can often attach letters to them.
6. 🎲 The "S" Strategy
Never underestimate the letter S.
If you have an S, look at every word already on the board and ask:
Can I make this plural or change it into another valid word?
For example:
CAT → CATS
BOOK → BOOKS
PLAY → PLAYS
But the real power is that you can sometimes add an S to an existing word while simultaneously creating another word crossing it.
That can produce a huge score.
7. 💥 High-Scoring 4-Letter Words
These are excellent because they're short enough to fit into tight spaces.
JAZZ — FIZZ — BUZZ — FUZZ — QUIZ — JINX — JUNK — JUMP — ZINC — ZOOM — WAXY — EXAM — AXIS — ZERO — ZONE
My top five:
🥇 JAZZ — 29
🥈 FIZZ — 29
🥉 BUZZ — 29
FUZZ — 29
QUIZ — 22
🏆 8. Seven-Letter "Bingo" Strategy
This is where Scrabble can change dramatically.
If you use all seven tiles in your rack, you receive a 50-point bonus in standard Scrabble.
So don't always play a 4- or 5-letter word immediately.
Sometimes it's worth keeping:
A E I N R S T
because you might be able to form:
NASTIER • RETAINS • RETINAS • RETRIES • STAINER • STEARIN • STEARIN?
The key is learning anagram families rather than memorizing isolated words.
Some useful 7-letter bingo families
AEINRST
- ANESTRI?
- NASTIER
- RETAINS
- RETINAS
- RETRIES
- STAINER
- STEARIN
AEILNRT
- NAILER?
- RATLINE
- RELIANT
- RETINAL
- TAILER
- RATLINE
AEINOST
- ATONIES
- NOTAISE
- SEATOIN
- TISANES
DEINRST
- DENTIST
- TINDERS
- SNIDERS
- STRINED
🧠 9. The Most Important Scrabble Rule
When you look at your seven letters, don't ask only:
"What's the highest-scoring word I can make?"
Instead ask three questions:
① Can I make a 7-letter word?
50-point bonus!
② Can I use a high-value letter on a premium square?
Look for:
Q • Z • J • X
③ Can I make TWO words at once?
This is where experienced Scrabble players often beat players who simply know more vocabulary.
A modest-looking play can produce 30–50 points if it creates several words simultaneously.
